Question
Olivia Newton-John: Physical publicity still

Which singer turned down the song "Physical"?

Last updated: September 28, 2025

Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" became the steamiest workout anthem of 1981, spending 10 weeks at number one and transforming sweet Sandy from "Grease" into a Lycra-clad aerobics instructor who knew exactly what kind of exercise she had in mind. But before Newton-John got her hands on the song that would redefine her career, the writers offered it to another powerhouse vocalist who took one look at those suggestive lyrics and said thanks but no thanks. Which singer turned down the song "Physical"?

Correct Answer: Tina Turner

Let's get one thing out of the way: songwriter Steve Kipner made clear a few years ago that while he thought of Rod Stewart when writing "Physical," he never wanted him to the record song. Instead, it was offered to Tina Turner, who found the lyrics too steamy and quickly passed. Her new manager, Roger Davies, also happened to be managing Olivia Newton-John and offered it to her instead. Newton-John recorded the track but immediately got cold feet about the whole thing. She wanted to kill the release but the label and Davies knew it was going to be a smash. Nobody expected the wholesome "Grease" star to sing about getting horizontal, and even if the music video tried to pretend it was about exercise, we all knew what was really going on. Newton-John's panic turned out to be completely unnecessary since "Physical" became her biggest hit ever, selling over two million copies and camping out at number one for two and a half months straight. The song basically owned 1981 and became the most successful single of the entire decade.
